Exchange Week Brief 22.08.2026: Goobit Changes Leadership
A weekly overview for the Baltic and Nordic crypto exchange, hardware wallet, card, and tax tool segment: no new clearly dated events in the last 24 hours, so we provide a weekly summary with precise dates and a watchlist.
No new clearly dated events in our segment in the last 24 hours, so we offer a weekly overview. The main dated event: on 14th August, Swedish exchange group Goobit (BTCX) announced a new leader - former Bybit Nordics head Gustav Buder, who takes office on 15th August, amidst an ongoing MiCA licence appeal. With market background and an updated watchlist.
Saturday, 22nd August 2026. This is a Week Brief publication. In the last 24 hours, there have been no clearly dated, new significant regulatory or product events in our segment - crypto exchanges and CASPs, hardware wallets, crypto cards, and tax tools serving the Baltics (LV, LT, EE) and Nordics (FI, SE, NO, DK). Therefore, today's issue provides a weekly overview with precise dates: one new event in the segment (Goobit leadership change), a broader market background, and an updated watchlist. Older, ongoing stories are covered as context, not presented as fresh news.
Main Event of the Week: Goobit/BTCX Changes Leadership
The most clearly dated event in the segment this past week is a leadership change at the Swedish crypto exchange group Goobit. On 14th August, the company announced that Gustav Buder, previously head of global exchange Bybit's Nordic operations, would become the new CEO from 15th August. Concurrently, the outgoing CEO and founder, Christian Ander, is moving to the position of Chairman of the Board, maintaining strategic involvement.
Goobit Group AB (publ) is a Stockholm-based, publicly listed company that operates BTCX, founded in 2011 and one of the oldest still-active Bitcoin-only exchanges. Buder's experience at Bybit included building the Nordic team, launching the exchange's EU payment card, and a sponsorship partnership at a Stockholm tennis tournament. His mandate at Goobit emphasises 'regulatory maturity' alongside product development and Nordic market expansion.
The leadership change should be read in light of previous context, which we are not repeating as new news in this issue. The Swedish regulator Finansinspektionen rejected Goobit's MiCA CASP licence application in July 2026, citing deficiencies in internal controls and anti-money laundering (AML) mechanisms; we reported on this event in a separate article on 2nd July. The company appealed the decision to the administrative court (Förvaltningsrätten), and BTCX continues to operate in Sweden while the dispute remains unresolved. The appointment of a new leader is a logical step in this situation: for a challenger-type exchange fighting for MiCA compliance, leadership experience in a regulated environment is a direct competitive asset.
Interpretations should be taken with moderation. The leadership change and emphasis on 'regulatory maturity' is a concrete, dated corporate step; it does not, by itself, resolve the deficiencies noted by Finansinspektionen and does not alter the outcome of the appeal, which remains open. For the regional user, the direct impact is currently indirect - BTCX services continue, but long-term certainty depends on the final outcome of the authorisation process.
Market Background: Bitcoin Price Breakout (Macro, Not Segment News)
At a broader market level, on 20th August, Bitcoin briefly reached approximately $70,000 for the first time since 2nd June, breaking out of several months of summer stagnation where the price had been stuck in the $60,000-$80,000 range. This was driven by several factors simultaneously, including bond buybacks and regulatory events in the broader market. We emphasise that this is a macroeconomic background, not an event in our product segment; we include it solely because the price environment affects regional exchange volumes and revenues, as illustrated by Nordic operators' quarterly reports in recent weeks.
Watchlist (Ongoing Stories, Not Fresh News)
These points are not news from the last 24 hours; we keep them under observation with precise previous dates.
Goobit MiCA Appeal: Following the July rejection, the administrative court process continues. We are monitoring for any court or Finansinspektionen decision that will determine BTCX's operational status in Sweden.
Coldcard (Coinkite) Incident: We followed the depletion of funds caused by hardware wallet seed entropy errors in daily briefs on 2nd-4th August and in the weekly brief on 9th August. The total depleted amount, according to industry estimates, has exceeded 2,000 BTC and remains an estimate, so we consider this an ongoing, not a new, event. The regional conclusion remains unchanged: the risk is tied to specific Coldcard models and firmware versions, not to any Baltic or Nordic platform; affected seeds require migration to a new key.
Crypto Card Segment: Kraken launched a Mastercard network debit card in the EEA and UK on 14th July with up to 2% cashback in Bitcoin; on 21st August, the company announced a separate debit card for the US market. For Baltic and Nordic EEA users, the July EEA card is applicable; a separate regional rollout has not yet been announced, and the US product does not apply to the region.
Hardware Wallets: The discovery of a laser attack on the Trezor Safe 7 and its TROPIC01 chip (Ledger Donjon, 3rd June) remains in context; manufacturer Tropic Square promises improved versions by the end of 2026. No new information this week.
ESMA MiCA Register: As of early August, the register contained 321 CASPs; 12 new companies were added on 31st July, but none were from the Baltics or Nordics. We continue to monitor for future updates regarding regional firms.
Norway's Transitional Regime: The MiCA transitional period in Norway, following Finanstilsynet's recommendation, was extended until 30th June 2026, and this deadline has passed. We are monitoring how Finanstilsynet proceeds with local exchanges' (e.g., Firi, K33, NBX, Tyr Markets) authorisation applications after the transition ends.
Outlook for Next Week
Key checkpoints in the coming days: any signal from Förvaltningsrätten or Finansinspektionen in the Goobit case; the appearance of new Baltic or Nordic firms in ESMA MiCA register updates; and possible regional crypto card or tax tool (Koinly, Blockpit, Divly) seasonal announcements. If any of these events materialise with a clear date, we will revert to the classic daily brief format.
Summary for Market Participants
In the Nordic exchange segment, consolidation and the struggle for regulatory positioning continue. Goobit's leadership change confirms that MiCA compliance has become a central strategic issue for local challenger players, not just a cost of compliance.
Regulatory authorisation status must be distinguished from corporate announcements. The appointment of a new leader does not replace the outcome of the authorisation process; BTCX users and partners should monitor court and regulator decisions directly.
For hardware wallet users in the Baltics and Nordics, the reminder remains valid: check if your device model and firmware are affected by the Coldcard incident, and if necessary, migrate to a new, securely entropy-generated seed.
The price environment (Bitcoin's breakout on 20th August) is a macro fact, not a segment event; a recovery in trading volumes, if it continues, may soften revenue pressure on regional exchanges, but this will only be confirmed by future quarterly reports.
